Feeding Nations, One Procrastinating Minute at a Time
Who has not played some game on the computer when they should have been working on a project, reviewing some concept, cleaning the house, etc etc etc? Now what if you could actually feed impoverished people in poverty stricken nations while you wasted your own time? Now you can! ![]()
Today, while wasting time, I came across the “will work for food” blog, which brought my attention to this amazingly phenomenal web site, (which I hope will give me a better grasp on the English vocabulary before too long.)
The basic concept of “Free Rice” is this: The website provides a new vocab word, which you are responsible to correlate with the appropriate meaning. Each correct answer donates 10 grains of rice to the United Nations World Food Program. The rice is bought with the money earned for the site through the advertisements that appear at the bottom of every question, advertisements which, by the way, do not dominate or interfere with the pleasure of the experience. So what are the benefits of the game for you, dear procrastinator? Simply put, expanding your vocabulary will enable you to
- Formulate your ideas better
- Write better papers, emails and business letters
- Speak more precisely and persuasively
- Comprehend more of what you read
- Read faster because you comprehend better
- Get better grades in high school, college and graduate school
- Score higher on tests like the SAT, GRE, LSAT and GMAT
- Perform better at job interviews and conferences
- Sell yourself, your services, and your products better
- Be more effective and successful at your job
So, in summation, you have something to occupy you when the work in front of you seems less then attractive, you are actively contributing to and participating in the care of our global community, your vocabulary grows exponentially, and last but not least, you may just feel good about it to boot.
Downside? It may take you even longer to get to that bit of work you should be doing just this moment ![]()
